Hi! I’m Pam, a freelancer of a certain age. Welcome to my site!
I am a brand marketing consultant based in Columbus, Ohio. I started freelancing full-time in 2022 after decades of working in corporate retail and nonprofit marketing. The decision to leave my Vice President of Marketing position to freelance was not easy or planned. As a woman in her mid-50s, freelancing seemed like a young person’s game rather than something that would work for me. Ultimately, I took the leap; it was the best decision ever.
Freelancing has offered me the opportunity to choose interesting and fulfilling work and the people I want to work with. It has given me time and space to rediscover my passion for art and travel. I’ve also met some incredible and supportive colleagues as a freelancer.
But freelancing is not for everyone. I’ve learned some hard lessons about myself and about the world of business through freelancing. I’ve had to break out of the comfort of an executive position and relearn how to be scrappy and resourceful. Freelancing requires strong networking and sales skills, which are not easy for me. It’s a daily struggle to step out of my comfort zone as a freelancer.
As I’ve built my business, I’ve noticed that there are little resources for women like me who have worked all of their lives, achieved a certain amount of success, but are realizing that they want more, not just at work but in life. Why is it that women of a certain age are overlooked as sources of inspiration, viable employees, or potential business owners? This website aims to change that.
I believe that words bind us together as humans and that the best stories remind us of our humanity. I will use this space to tell my freelancing story and to empower all women to find strength, comfort, joy, and success through freelancing or anything else they decide to do. This site will also provide tangible resources and advise for freelancers of any age.
If you’ve read Simon Sinek, you understand the importance of finding your “Why”. My “Why” is making the world a better place. It’s why I worked for a nonprofit for more than 7 years before becoming a freelancer. It’s why I volunteer as a member of the Columbus Museum of Art and at the LSS Food Pantries. It’s why I write postcards for Postcards to Voters every election cycle.
My chihuahua Grandon may think differently. He thinks my “Why” is taking care of him. He’s not totally wrong. He definitely runs the household. You’ll find the two of us walking in the park or just around our neighborhood when I am not writing or reading.
Grandon says, “Thanks for visiting Mom’s site!”
I’d love to hear your story of freelancing at a certain age!
